FILLER. 101

What are dermal fillers?

The most commonly used fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, which is naturally found in the skin. Thanks to its ability to store moisture, hyaluronic acid is responsible for giving skin a plump and hydrated look. Hyaluronic acid fillers are a gel-like substance that creates volume in the skin. Once injected, they begin to integrate into the substance of the skin, attracting water molecules and hydrating the surrounding tissue. Whilst other types of filler exist, they are less popular as they are non-reversible. This is a major disadvantage because these fillers cannot be dissolved in the event of complications.

What are dermal fillers used for?

Dermal fillers can help with all of the following issues:

  • Sunken cheeks

  • Thin lips

  • Marionette and smile lines

  • Crow's feet

  • Asymmetrical features

  • Weak chin

  • Noticeable scars

  • Frown lines

In some cases, injectable fillers can even be used to plump up the backs of your hands to give them a smooth, youthful appearance.

Most fillers last anywhere from six months to several years, depending on the type of filler and injection site. Your medical Injector will be able to tell you how long your chosen fillers should last.

Results can be immediate. Some people may initially feel like the treatment areas are "overfilled," but once the swelling subsides and the filler settles, the end-result can look more natural.

What is the difference between fillers and Botox?

Both are used to rectify or prevent the signs of ageing, but fillers and Botox are quite different. While fillers are typically used to add volume and plump the skin, Botox (which is a brand name for botulinum toxin) temporarily blocks nerve signals in the muscles where it's injected to restrict movement and treat 'expression lines'.

What to expect when getting dermal fillers

During the procedure

Depending on which filler you get, the area may be first numbed with a topical cream. Some fillers have a local anesthetic mixed in, so you won't need a numbing cream.

The area will be sterilized, and the treatment will be carefully injected. The entire process usually takes less than an hour, and you'll be able to resume your normal activities soon after.

During recovery

Typically there is no real downtime with injectable fillers. Most plastic surgeons recommend limiting strenuous activity for 48 hours in order to facilitate faster healing, but you can usually resume a regular schedule immediately.

There will be some swelling, soreness and bruising around the injection site, but this will resolve within a few days.

Are Dermal Fillers right for me?

The number of dermal-filler procedures have drastically increased over the years. The popularity of these procedures is rapidly increasing, especially in younger patients. It is now more popular to get smaller procedures over one’s lifetime, rather than waiting until your sixties and getting a full facelift. This is because dermal fillers can be used as a preventive measure as well as a treatment.

As such, if you get fillers and you don’t like what you see, the hyaluronic acid can be dissolved quickly and easily. Consult with a trained medical aesthetician or cosmetic injector to ensure that you are suitable to receive cosmetic injections.
